Ladies Junior League Final
Tierney on fire as Mostrim strike late
Mostrim ladies clinched back-to-back Junior league titles following a hard fought win over the championship title winners Colmcille.
In a match played in ideal weather conditions at Pearse Park on Sunday last, the Colmcille girls were first to score through International soccer star Michelle Farrell, when she raced through the Mostrim defence to plant the ball in the top left hand corner of the net.
Jenny Reilly and Alice McKeown both added points to leave Colmcille leading 1-2 to 0-0 with twelve minutes gone in the first half.
Mostrim opened their account with a Sarah Tierney point from a free and the same player added another two points to narrow the gap with ten minutes remaining.
Michelle Farrell and Patricia Reilly added a point each for Colmcille and Edel Kenny and Oonagh Hussey replied for the Mostrim girls to leave the score 1-4 to 0-5.
Colmcille finished the half strongly and added two more points through Caroline Doyle and Patricia Hourican to leave the half-time score 1-6 to 0-5 in favour of the north Longford girls.
With a strong breeze at their backs, Mostrim girls had the advantage of the elements for the second half and they wasted no time in narrowing the gap straight from the restart. Sarah Tierney had two points in as many minutes before Leah Farrell had the gap narrowed to the minimum 1-6 to 0-8.
The game entered the final quarter with both sides failing to convert easy scoring chances and Colmcille got their first score of the second half in the 47th minute before Oonagh Hussey scored Mostrim's goal on the twenty minute mark to put them ahead for the first time 1-9 to 1-7.
The fact that this was Colmcille's third Sunday on the trot to be playing was beginning to take its toll and the girls were getting tired coming to the last ten minutes. T
his gave the Mostrim girls the advantage nearing the finishing line, as Sarah Tierney added another three points and Michelle Burke scored another point to put six points between the teams with three minutes remaining.
Colmcille launched one final attack that yielded a well taken goal from Alice McKeown before Oonagh Hussey finished the scoring for the Mostrim girls with a point in injury time.
