Spoils shared but Kilmaine advance 2009-08-26 09:32:14

IFC Section 1 Kilmaine 2-07 Killala 1-10 written by Mark Thornton Mayo News 18th Aug 2009 A share of the spoils in Kilmaine on Sunday afternoon was enough to see the home side qualify for the quarter finals as table toppers in Section 1. Killala, county junior champions in 2008, wont be involved in the knockout stages but have also avoided a relegation dogfight after finishing third in the group. The North Mayo side made the early running in this game and were 1-02 to 0-0 to the good inside the opening minutes. The goal came courtesy of full forward Brendan Garvin , while county minor Andrew Farrell had opened the scoring with a second minute point. Wing forward Alex Quinn chipped in with a white flag the far side of the goal, and a surprise looked to be on the cards. But Kilmaine - county finalists in last years Intermediate Championship - finally bolted out of the blocks. The goal they needed to ignite their challnge came courtesy of veteran full forward Brian haughnessy, and Tomas McDonagh tacked on a point to reduce the deficit to the minimum. But with the hosts proving wasteful in front of goal, Killala made the better use of their opportunities. Man of the match Marcus Hannick led the chargewith two points from frees, while corner forward Mark Maheady and even full back Karl Dooher also got on the scoresheet. Two converted frees from Tomas Burke kept Kilmaine in touch, but the gap was three points at the break1-06 - 1-03 in favour of the boys in blue. The second half was largely forgettable, and referee Ronan Gurren handed out a plethora of yellow cards before two players - Tomas McDonagh of Kilmaine and Killala\'s Karl Dooher - received second yellow and then reds. On the footballing side of things, Kilmaine had the better of the third quarter, although it took ten second -half minutes for a score to arrive, courtesy of a Paul Doherty free. Brian Shaughnessy got his second gol of the afternoon to nudge Kilmaine in front, 2-04- 1-06, and Joey Maloney\'s first point doubled the green and red advantage. But Killala weren\'t giving up the ghost, and levelled matters thanks to points from corner forwatd Kevin Whyte(free) and wing forward James Ruddy. With time ticking away , Joey Maloney edged Kilmaine back in front with two points- one a \'45 , the other a free. That looked like it would be enough to give the locals a victory, but Marcus Hannick had other ideas, landing two late points, including a free, to ensure the sides finished as they began - all square Kilmaine TO\'Haire, G Doherty, D O\'Dea, G O\'Dea, J Walsh, P O\'Dea, J McDonagh, F Burke, D Burke, J Maloney(0-3)P.Doherty(0-01)T McDonagh(0-01)T Burke( 0-02)B Shaughnessy(2-0)B Cull Subs used C Murphy Killala D Walsh, J Barrett, K Dooher, M Dooher, D Lowther, E Clarke, D McGuire,M Hannick(0-04)G Ferguson, A Quinn(0-01)A Farrell(0-01)J Ruddy(0-01)K Whyte(0-01)B Garvin(1-0)M Maheady(0-01) Subs used K Murray, K McLoughlin Referee Ronan Gurren
