Mayo easily account for the Rossies 2009-06-23 10:43:08

Mayo cruise into Connacht final

Mayo 3-18

Roscommon 0-7

NOBODY expected Mayo to have it so easily against Roscommon that the final margin of victory would be 20 points and that the result would be beyond doubt long before half-time.

But that’s exactly how it turned out as Mayo turned up, clicked into gear and sailed away from their opponents who looked like they never left the dressing room.

It means a Connacht final appearance on July 20 against Galway or Sligo who meet in the second semi-final on Sunday next in Sligo.

Ronan McGarrity ended up as the RTÉ Man of the Match following a dominant display in midfield but a lot more Mayo players than him will be content with their performance.

Aidan Kilcoyne repaid the trust vested in him by management in starting him ahead of Conor Mortimer with a fine tally of 1-3 in the first quarter hour while beside him Aidan O’Shea again looked very comfortable at this level.

Alan Dillon was impressive at centre-half forward while Trevor Mortimer, Peadar Gardiner and Andy Moran got through a pile of work around the middle.

A total of 15,689 patrons turned up to witness Saturday evening’s game at McHale Park and a good portion of them were able to spend the second half admiring the nearly finished and impressive new stand as the teams continued to play in a game the result of which was long decided.

It was Mayo’s blistering start that paved the way for this. Aidan Kilcoyne got them off the mark with a well converted ’45 on three minutes and one minute later he had the ball in the net.

Aidan O’Shea picked up a loose ball after Roscommon defenders John Nolan and Paul Kelly got in each other’s way and the Breaffy teenager fed Kilcoyne who finished coolly past Geoffrey Claffey.

An Alan Dillon free and another ’45 from Kilcoyne added to Mayo’s points tally before Pat Harte converted a penalty on 14 minutes.

Attacking corner-back Donal Vaughan was brought down in the area after O’Shea turned over the ball and Kilcoyne fed Vaughan and Mayo were nine points to the good.

They kept going for the jugular and four points from Kilcoyne, Dillon (2) and Trevor Mortimer followed before the final stake to the Roscommon heart was applied by Aidan O’Shea who thundered the ball to the back of the net on 24 minutes after being fed by Alan Dillon.

That left Mayo 3-7 to 0-0 in front and the Roscommon corpse had to continue to traipse around McHale Park.

Ronan McGarrity added to the misery with a fine point before Conor Devaney converted a free after Andy Moran fouled Gary Cox.

Dillon and Gardiner would each strike a point apiece before the break and Mayo were 3-10 to 0-1 in front at half-time.

The second half was a procession with Roscommon incapable of mounting a comeback and Mayo easing off the gas somewhat.

Conor Devaney got their first point of the half before Mayo went up and struck three points from Andy Moran, McGarrity and Harte.

Roscommon’s first point from play came on 46 minutes from midfielder Brian Higgins but with Mayo hitting four of the next five points – Gardiner, Trevor Mortimer and Dillon (2) to a Donal Shine free for Roscommon – John O’Mahony’s men led by 22 points after 62 minutes.

Roscommon would manage to outscore the hosts by 0-3 to 0-1 in the closing minutes. Captain Gary Cox, one of the few Roscommon players to not give up the ghost, hit two points from play and Karol Mannion hit a long range effort. At the other end substitute Mark Ronaldson got in on the scoring act with a point after his clubmate Trevor Mortimer saw his effort for Goal of the Season crash back off the angle.

It was probably the only thing that didn’t go right on the day. Tougher tests most certainly lie ahead.
