SOUTH DOWN TEAMS CLAIM TOP PRIZES AT INTER COUNTY BLITZ .On Saturday past 3rd of September St Marys Park Burren was the venue for the Annual South Down inter county U14 Development squad Blitz run by the South Down Board.
Teams from East Down , South Down, Antrim and Monaghan took part in two sections. In each section four teams competed and played three games each. In the A Section South Down and Monaghan qualified for the Final, with South Down emerging as winners in a tightly fought encounter. Patrick Murdock was solid in defence and later played in Midfield with C J Barr who also had a great performance. Ronan Mc Avoy keep things very secure in defence, and the player of this section was Gerard Bagnall. His free taking, positional play, passing, and over all skill was a treat for all to watch, and no doubt a player to look out for in the future.
In the B section again it was a South Down team who made it to the Final this time to play an Antrim team. With only one point separating the sides at half time, the second half produced a wonderful performance from the South Down squad. Shea Harper kept the back line tight, Trevor Palmer played a captains role, John Madine and Turlough Byrne dominated the middle of the park in this half and Josh Dornan and Darragh Campbell put on a fine display. All players who played in this Blitz showed some outstanding football and proved how successful development squads at this level have been this year .
In his address South Down Chairman Michael Mc Ardle thanked the visiting teams, the referees, the Burren club for their great facilities and the ladies who provided the food for all in attendance.
Thanks was also extended to fellow board members who helped organise this great event, clubs who provided pitches through out the season, and guests who attended to show their support. Speaking to the South Down Squads at the end of this their last meeting of the season he paid tribute to them for the wonderful commitment they showed this year, and also to their coaches who freely gave up their time to work with these players. He wished them well and is sure that there are future County players among them. This brought the curtain down on a fantastic day and season . Well done to all involved
