Carryduff Minor Ladies notch up second win in Antrim Minor Football League
Carryduff Minors chalked up a comprehensive victory over St. Brigid’s In the Antrim Minor League on Sunday at Boucher Road with a score of 6 – 6 to 1 – 3. In this, their second game in the competition, the girls showed flashes of the form we would expect from them but at other times early season rustiness was very evident. However, Management will take heart from how the debutants at this level have coped with the step up in grade.
Claire McGinnity had another outstanding game at corner back, Katie Cunningham was again very much at home when she came on, and Amy Hamill, starting her first game as full forward grew in confidence as the game progressed.
Carryduff had much of the early play in the first half but as in their previous game a lack of concentration in the last third meant they failed to capitalise until the 10th minute when Amy Hamill found the net for the first time after a flowing move involving Katie Magorrian and Catriona Hynes found her free in front of goal.
This spurred Carryduff on but they were guilty of some wayward finishing before Siobhan Cunningham found the net twice in quick succession. With this cushion Carryduff should have pushed on but instead in roused St. Brides and they recorded their first score with a goal at the other end and pushed on for more.
Luckily for Carryduff, Orla McKay was masterful at full back, and with the support of Clare Boyd, Megan Connery and Emily Hewitt, St. Bride’s were kept out. Carryduff started to take control again; Emily Duffy constantly drove forward from half back and Siobhan Cunningham added another point before the hard working Fiona McCauley added the final one before half time to leave the interval score 3 – 2 to 1 – 0.
The second half started with St. Bride’s on top and they added two points without reply early in the second half. The Duff defence was under pressure but stood firm and eventually got back on top in their midfield sector where Megan Doherty played a captain’s role.
Amy Hamill scored her second goal after another good move, and this was followed quickly by a point from Megan Doherty. Hamill then got her third and Doherty another point to give the Duff a commanding lead.
St.Bride’s tried to get back into the game but were thwarted by Sian Clifford in the Duff goal with some great saves and they only managed one final point. Sinead Early, making her debut at this level added 1 – 2 for Duff before Eimear McGrady added a final point to leave the final score
Carryduff 6–06, St. Brigid’s 1-03.
