St Columbans Upset the odds again!
Wednesday the 23rd of November was the feast of Saint Columban and in Pairc Esler the small Kilkeel school served up a feast of football as David beat Golaith in the Down U16 Vocational Schools Medallion Cup Final. St Marks went into the game as huge favourites having comprehensively defeated everyone in the league stages including St Columbans but Steven Poachers men totally out fought and out thought them in this one sided final. The kilkeel men got the perfect start when Ross Cunningham pointed from an early free and despite a Conor Doyle reply for St Marks a minute later St Columbans took totally control of the first half with John Paul Farrell outstanding and Daithi Young and Gareth Mc Dowell hitting the net to leave St Columbans 2-04 to 0-02 up at half time.
The second half fight back from St Marks that everyone was expecting didnt happen as the Mourne men took total control of the game and a couple of early scores from Conor Sloan and Ross Cunningham had this contest over long before the final whistle. To their credit though Joe Morgan and Caolon Mc Evoy at Full back for St Marks battled really hard but frustration got the better of Ryan Magee and Conor Doyle as they both seen red cards in the remaining ten minutes but these incidents werent enough to overshadow what was a most impressive display from a very strong St Columbans team.
